The North Beach district in San Francisco has a new addition to the neighborhoods’ vibrant bar and restaurant scene. Experience design company, Eight Inc. and Little Vine owners, the award-winning team behind Union Larder, collaborate once again to bring The Salzburg, an Austrian Alpine inspired restaurant and wine chalet.
The vision was influenced by nostalgic memories of The Salzburg owner and restauranteur Jay Esopenko and Eight Inc. Partner and CXO, Wilhelm Oehl of hiking and skiing the Alps from hut to hut and recreating that sense of place. Immediately as you enter, you begin to feel the same warmth and comfort one would after retreating from a long day in the mountains – a destination for refuge from the hills and winds of San Francisco, The Salzburg is where you can enjoy Central European themed fare in a cozy, intimate setting.
The space consists of a simple material palette with a bigger impact on transcending the experience into the urban landscape. The signature element that sets the tone for the entire space is the starburst symbol, a key token of the Alps. It is represented throughout the restaurant’s unique facade and concealed throughout the interior. During the day, the light shines in through the starbursts illuminating beautiful patterns onto the wall and the furniture. In the evening, the inside light omits out to create a constellation highlighting its presence. The space includes an elongated bar, dining booths, a courtyard with an open gas fireplace space that evokes the warmth of the huts, a cellar and a private dining room. Rustic furnishings, exposed timber and soft lighting create a charming backdrop to the curated menu of homemade sausages, local wine, and beer selection all influenced by the Alpine region.
“Eight Inc. has created a space in all of San Francisco that captures authenticity,” says Esopenko. “To be in a city full of amazing restaurants and know yours is the most unique is something very special. Customers that walk through the doors of The Salzburg really feel like they’ve been transported from North Beach to somewhere in the Alps.”
The Salzburg is tucked away at 663 Union Street and is perfect for those looking for an apres-work retreat or a departure from the usual hectic city scene.
